DUE to a peculiar demand for the touted king of all fruits, local exporter Top Fruits Sdn Bhd, has gained traction in the China market for its fast-selling frozen durians over the past three months.
A pioneer exporter of durians and honey jackfruit in the region, Top Fruits has been the favourite choice for its juicy and high-quality grade of local durians that has been selling like hot cakes once its reaches the supermarket shelves in the republic said its chief executive officer Dr Tan Sue Yee.
“There has been three shipments of local durians of the ever popular Musang King or D-197 (Mao Shan Wang) and D-24 to main cities like Shanghai, Shenzen and Guangzhou for this year,” Tan said in an interview.
To cater to the growing demand, the company is aiming to ship out a total of 20 containers of the seedless packed durians weighing some four tonnes each this year, he added.
Their next batch delivery to the republic will start this month, Tan said, adding that the company sees the durian trees bearing fruits at least twice a year.
Established in 1986, the company harvest its durians from its 300-acre orchard in Batu Pahat, Johor. Its frozen durians are also exported to Hong Kong, Australia, UK and several European countries like Holland.
Stating the company recorded an estimated sales of a total of RM2-3 million last year, Top Fruits, is the only one of five fruit exporters given the trump card for the export of frozen durians, following an official inspection by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China, said Tan.
“Their inspection was stringent and our standards had surpassed the other companies,” he said, adding that they were given the green light in March this year to export directly the frozen durians.
Their durian orchard has also been awarded the SALM (Farm Accreditation Scheme of Malaysia) certificate, a recognition for strict quality control in agricultural products, he also said.
Having the factory close to the plantations also helps give them the competitive edge and reduce operating costs which translate to lower prices to buyers with 70% catering to the export market, he added.
Apart from the Musang King and D-24, their other durians include the D-101 Kim Hong and Durian Mas, adding that their durians are a hit because its primary durian trees are over 20 years-old that guarantees the highest grades.
Besides catering to market for fresh and frozen durians, Top Fruits also cultivates a variety of other tropical fruits like mangosteen, rambutan and honey jackfruit, he said.
The company had also recently ventured into the the fast-moving consumer goods for the production of lime fruit drink series, he added.
